On the Road Again
Question: What do you get when you stuff a laptop, road bike, sled-canoe, a few clothes, one ski, one ski pole and half a kayak paddle into a small red car?
Answer: My life! I left Grand Marais last week for nearly a month and a half of presentations about the North Pole and my upcoming Save the Poles expedition. I'm in Wisconsin now, but will soon be heading to Minnesota then Hawaii, then Seattle, then Wisconsin again, then England.
I have to admit, I am getting good at this traveling thing. While I miss my home and friends in Grand Marais, I am a very efficient traveler and have managed to distill everything in my life for now down to a few key elements. If it didn't fit in my car, then its still in Grand Marais.
These days I feel alarmingly similar to an old Saturday Night Live Skit. Chris Farley is a motivational speaker who lives in a 'van down by the river.' Please don't let that be me. Please...
Still, I feel that what I am doing is a good thing: talking with people about what they can do to reduce their carbon footprint and help save polar bears. I try to lead by example as well. While I am driving a lot these days, I purchased carbon offsets for my car. I know its something small, but little things add up. I have been known to say... Begin with one step.
Yesterday, I was at doing a presentation at Whitnall Middle School just outside of Milwaukee. After my program, one seventh grader asked, "what did you like better, the end or the journey?" I was so impressed with such an insightful question.
