Day 2: Polar Potpourri!
You know the definition of crazy, right? Doing the same thing and expecting different results... Here I am on the Arctic Ocean dealing with crazy ice, thin ice and everything in between.
If Ryan, my partner from my 2014 full North Pole expedition was here I would use the phrase that we always told each other when things were bad, 'this was your idea.'
Of course, it was hard to be negative about anything today as I got the most amazing night sleep in the world. I've been working with Therm-A-Rest developing a new sleeping bag and I have a prototype with me. It's crazy cozy. I closed my eyes and woke up in the exact same position not having moved once!
Honestly, it wasn't nearly that bad today. Sure visibility went in and out. Sure we got into some decent sized pressure ridges and ice blocks, but we also made over eight nautical miles and it's just our second day on the ice and my team is still getting their sea ice legs.
Regardless, I was impressed with the team's effort today. It was not easy and we encountered enough obstacles that we were never bored. One pressure ridge Colin and Rohan lifted sleds over. Several times we all took off our skis and walked through rubble. Julie got on one side of some blocks then I pushed relay style with Masha hauling skis and poles over.
We did manage to find a couple of larger pans of ice and were able to ski in a nearly straight line for nearly 20 minutes. Still, the ice is broken up because it's thinner. This is my fourth trip to on the Arctic Ocean and the previous three were all two month epics. Since 2005, I have seen the melting of the ice cap first hand.
To make matters worse, The runway at Barneo has cracked again leaving us for the moment stranded - although we know it will be repaired by the time we reach the pole.
The most important news is that my baby girl is one year old today. Happy Birthday sweet Ellie! I love you and can't wait to see you soon!
Distance traveled: 8.5 nautical miles
