Recovery Room Flashback
I am writing to you from a comfortable bed in a Duluth, Minn. area Hotel 8. Yesterday, I had knee surgery on both my knees. Nearly two years ago, I tore my right mid meniscus. I managed to get to the North Pole on it but barely.
Since I need to start training for my next expedition, 'Save the Poles' (more soon) I figured now was the best time to get my aging body fixed. Better, I thought, to check out both knees while I was knocked out, since I was already paying through the nose for the anesthesia. In fact, being put under was one of the craziest experiences I've had in a long time. When I came to, I hadn't even realized the surgery had happened. Now I am on the road to recovery. In six weeks, I'll be running and biking my way to super fitness.
Which brings me to the last three weeks... It's been a bit hectic and I want to take some time to bring you up to speed on my goings on. I've been in India, Chicago and way back Salt Lake City. I'll start with my last day in Salt Lake.
The Outdoor Retailer show is always a lot of fun. This year was no exception. Unfortunately, I was only able to attend for two days. Highlights included meeting Buck Titlton (wilderness first aid guru), hanging out with the Atwater Carey guys, getting a book signed by Ed Viesturs (8000 meter mountain man) just to name a few.
I also had a brief meeting with the two guys in the picture. They are part of the all Super Sherpas expedition to Everest - Apa Sherpa and Lhakpa Galu Sherpa. These are the real superstars of the Himalayas. In fact, Lhakpa Galu, is the recorder holder for the fastest Everest ascent (under 11 hours).
As far as India, Chicago and next week... stay tuned.
